Fang is Rubeus Hagrid's pet dog. He is a huge black boarhound with long teeth. Despite his intimidating appearance and his loud barks, he is quite harmless and a coward at heart (PS8, PS15, CS14, CS15, PA11, OP20, HBP28, DH31). His first reaction to strangers is to jump up and try to lick their faces (PS8, OP20). However, he will fight anybody who tries to harm Hagrid (OP31). He is very attached to Hagrid (CS14), and tries to comfort him when he is depressed (PA7, PA11). He behaves enthusiastic towards friends of Hagrid (especially Harry Potter) and has a tendency to lick and drool on them (PS8, CS7, GF24, OP20, OP38, HBP11, HBP22). Fang accompanies Hagrid on his walks over the grounds and through the Forbidden Forest and during his Care of Magical Creatures lessons (PA6, GF13).

Norbert and the Forbidden Forest
Harry Potter and Ron Weasley met Fang on their first visit to Hagrid's hut. He immediately liked them (PS8).
Fang did not get along with Norbert—he stayed outside the hut after the dragon hurt his tail (PS14).
Hagrid and Fang accompanied Harry, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom and Draco Malfoy on their detention in the Forbidden Forest. When they split up, Malfoy wanted to go with Fang, although Hagrid warned him that the dog was a coward. Malfoy, Harry and Fang saw a hooded figure—Quirinus Quirrell—drink unicorn blood. Malfoy screamed and he and Fang ran away (PS15).
Hagrid's arrest and the visit to Aragog
Fang growled at Lucius Malfoy when he entered Hagrid's hut to announce Dumbledore's suspension. Hagrid entrusted Fang to Harry and Ron's care when he was taken to Azkaban. Fang yowled and scratched at the hut's door after his master had left (CS14).
Following Hagrid's last advice to them, Ron and Harry followed the spiders into the Forbidden Forest, taking Fang with them. The dog was barking loudly to show his happiness to see them and they had to glue his teeth together with some of Hagrid's treacle fudge. Inside the Forest, Fang was the first to notice the Flying Ford Anglia; he warned Harry and Ron with a loud bark. Like Harry and Ron, Fang was lifed up and carried away by an Acromantula. He was fighting and whining loudy until the spider set him down on Aragog's clearing, where he cowered silently. When the Ford Anglia came to their rescue, Ron seized Fang and threw him onto the backseat. Fang was howling madly while the car thrashed through the Forest. He flung himself at the window as they reached the edge of the Forest until Harry released him. Then he shot into Hagrid's hut, his tail between his legs. He hid under the blanket in his basket, shivering (CS15).
Rita Skeeter's scoop
Fang seemed quite unhappy when Hagrid locked himself in his cabin after Rita Skeeter's article about him; he barked madly and scratched at the door whenever the Trio approached the hut (GF24).
Hagrid under attack
He jumped up Dolores Umbridge and tried to lick her face when she came to Hagrid's hut after his return from his mission to the giants; she angrily waved her handbag at him. When she inquired after the broken mug on the floor and the voices she had heard, Hagrid used Fang to cover up for the Trio's visit, saying that the dog had broken the mug and he had talked been talking to him (OP20).
Fang attacked the Aurors who tried to arrest Hagrid. He was hit by a Stunner. Hagrid howled furiously and threw the Auror who had shot the Stunning Spell ten feet far. He slung Fang's limp body over his shoulders when he fled (OP31).

During the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, a Death Eater set fire to Hagrid's hut while Fang was locked inside it. The dog howled and panicked, but Hagrid was able to rescue him from the burning cabin. Some of his hair got burned, but otherwise he seemed unharmed. He accompanied Hagrid and Harry when they walked over to Dumbledore's corpse, keeping as close to their ankles as possible. He began to howl at the sight of the dead Headmaster (HBP28).

Fang hid with Grawp and Hagrid in a cave in the mountains close to Hogwarts after Hagrid had to leave the school (DH22, DH28). They could hear Voldemort's message to the school that they had until midnight to hand over Harry and immediately went to join the fight. Grawp carried Hagrid and Fang trough the Forest. He shoved them through a window when Hagrid asked him to put him down at the castle. They landed in a corridor right next to Harry. Fang greeted him enthusiastically. They went to look for Ron and Hermione. Fang panicked and ran off when a vase exploded next to them. Hagrid ran after him, leaving Harry alone (DH31).
