Fanfiction, often abbreviated to "fanfic" or "fic", is the term given to a genre of stories based upon a pre-existing work, typically a book, movie or television series. Fanfiction is written by an author other than the original, most often without the latter's consent, with no intention of profit. Fanfiction is typically a large portion of any given fandom.
The Harry Potter series has increased the number of fanfiction all around the world: there are about 300000 fics in FanFiction.Net's Harry Potter section.
Originally, Fanfiction.net also housed original fiction, but the two eventually split and original fiction was moved to FictionPress.com.
