Fairies are magical creatures. They are small (one to five inches in height), have a human body and insect wings of varying colour. Woodlands and glades are their natural habitat.
Fairies have very limited intelligence and cannot speak human language, although they are able to communicate with their own kind in high-pitched, buzzing noises. They are excessively vain and delight in being used as ornaments by wizards. They have magic, which is used as protection against predators, e.g. Augureys. Fairies can be quite quarrelsome.
Like insects, fairies are hatched as larvae from eggs. One fairy can lay up to 50 eggs on the underside of leaves. The brightly-coloured larvae will spin themselves into cocoons after 6 to ten days and emerge as fairies after a month. Bowtruckles like to eat fairy eggs (FBAZ).
Filius Flitwick decorated the Great Hall for Christmas with live fairies, among other items (PS12).
