Eagles
From UnknowableWiki
Eagles are large birds of prey which mainly inhabit Europe, Asia and Africa, but can also be found in North and South America and Australia. They are known for their majestic appearance and keen eyesight, and are often used in heraldry (WP).
Hippogriffs combine the head, wings and front legs of a giant eagle with the body and hind legs of a horse (FBAZ).
The Ravenclaw mascot is an eagle. It is present on the Ravenclaw blazon and the Hogwarts coat of arms (PS3, GF15). The door to the Ravenclaw common room has a bronze knocker the shape of an eagle. When used, the eagle will ask a question that has to be solved to gain admittance (DH29). Likewise, the Lovegoods' door has an eagle knocker, possibly implicating that they identify with Ravenclaw and its virtues (DH20). On the day of the arrival of the Durmstrang and Beauxbatons students for the Triwizard Tournament, the Great Hall is decorated with silk banners showing the mascots of all houses, including the eagle (GF15). Luna Lovegood wears what appears to be a live eagle on top of her head for the Quidditch match of Gryffindor against Ravenclaw in 1996 (OP30). When the first Ravenclaws seek refuge from Voldemort's reign at Hogwarts in a dormitory inside the Room of Requirement, tapestries showing the Ravenclaw eagle appear alongside the Gryffindor lion and the Hufflepuff badger (DH29).
Hermione Granger gives Harry Potter a luxury eagle-feather quill for Christmas in 1992 that he often uses over the following years (CS12, PA1, GF2).
