Dungbombs are a type of stinkbomb which, when used, give off the stench of feces. They were invented by Alberic Grunnion (FW).

Dungbombs are sold at Zonko's Joke Shop in Hogsmeade, and can be ordered by owl. Argus Filch, as caretaker of Hogwarts, loathes them; Fred and George Weasley, on the other hand, love them, as they are one of a prankster's best friends.

Mentions of Dungbombs in the series include:

  • The Weasley twins got into trouble with Filch in their first year for setting off a Dungbomb. Once in his office, the twins noticed a drawer marked Confiscated and Highly Dangerous; George then dropped another Dungbomb, and Fred stole the Marauder's Map from the drawer (PA10).
  • In their fifth year, the Weasley twins set off half-a-dozen Dungbombs at the end of the fall term to celebrate its conclusion (PA11).
  • When Harry Potter and Ron Weasley go to Hogsmeade for the second time, they buy several Dungbombs from Zonko's, along with several other joke items (PA14).
  • Harry and Hermione Granger plan to set off a bag of Dungbombs in the Gryffindor common room to clear it out on the night of November 22, 1994 so Harry can talk to Sirius Black in the common room fire about the Triwizard Tournament—it is, of course, a last resort, and is fortunately unnecessary (GF19).
  • Ron gives Harry a bag of Dungbombs for Christmas in their fourth year (GF23).
  • Ginny Weasley flicks Dungbombs at the door of the room in number twelve, Grimmauld Place, where the Order of the Phoenix is holding its meeting, to see if her mother had placed an Imperturbable Charm on the door to prevent the children in the household from listening. When Mrs. Weasley asks about the Dungbombs lying around the door, Ginny blames Crookshanks (OP5).
  • Someone (presumably Dolores Umbridge) tells off Filch that Harry Potter is placing a large order for Dungbombs during Harry's fifth year, probably looking for an excuse to confiscate and read Harry's mail (OP14).
  • Filch sniffs Harry when the latter is leaving the school for the first Hogsmeade visit of the year, probably looking for the Dungbombs he had been told about (OP16).
  • After Fred and George Weasley leave Hogwarts, having made Umbridge's life as Hogwarts' new Headmistress miserable, students continue the twins' tradition of causing mayhem, frequently dropping Dungbombs in the corridors, to the extent that students had to walk around with Bubble-Head Charms in the corridors (OP30).
  • Fred and George set off a Dungbomb under their Great-Aunt Muriel's chair at dinner when she was visiting for Christmas one year, after which she never came to the Burrow for the holiday, and probably wrote the twins out of her will (DH8).
