Dogs are a domesticated subspecies of wolves. They are carnivorous mammals that are often kept as pets (WP). In addition to the large number of breeds known to Muggles, there are some dog-like magical creatures, including giant three-headed dogs, Gytrashes and Crups (PS9, FBAZ). Crups look just like Jack Russel terriers except for the fact that they have a forked tail. They are very faithful pets to wizards, but aggressive towards Muggles (FBAZ). Gytrashes are large spectral hounds that live in forests, for example the Forbidden Forest (FW).

Rubeus Hagrid has a boarhound named Fang. He also owns a three-headed dog called Fluffy whom he lent to Albus Dumbledore to guard the Philosopher's Stone (PS8, PS11).

Marjorie Dursley breeds bulldogs. Her favourite dog, Ripper, has a particular aversion towards Harry Potter and chased him up a tree once (PA2).

Sirius Black's Animagus form is a giant black dog that resembles a Grim (PA17).

Ron Weasley's Patronus is a Jack Russel terrier (IME).

During the first task of the Triwizard Tournament, Cedric Diggory Transfigures a rock into a Labrador to divert the Swedish Short-Snout he has to pass. However, the dragon changes its mind halfway through the task and starts to pursue Cedric instead of the dog (GF20).
