Diffindo

Diffindo is a spell used to cut or rip apart objects.
Mentions of the spell in the series include:
- Harry Potter uses Diffindo to tear open Cedric Diggory's bag so he can get the latter alone to tell him about the first task of the Triwizard Tournament (GF19).
- Harry uses the spell to rip off the cover of the brand new copy of Advanced Potion-Making he acquires via owl order from Flourish and Blotts and replace its pages with those of the copy annotated by the Half-Blood Prince (HBP11).
- Hermione Granger tries to cast Diffindo on the ropes on which Ron Weasley had been bound during the confrontation with Antonin Dolohov and Thorfinn Rowle in the café on Tottenham Court Road. Hermione is unsuccessful on her first attempt, for her hands are shaking, and tears open Ron's jeans, cutting his knees. The girl then manages to cast the spell on the ropes themselves, freeing the boy (DH9).
- A Polyjuiced Harry attempts to use the charm on the chains binding Mary Cattermole to a chair in one of the old courtrooms on Level Ten of the Ministry of Magic. The spell does not have any effect (DH13).
- Harry uses Diffindo in order to break the ice covering the surface of the pool containing the sword of Gryffindor in the Forest of Dean (DH19).
