The Department of Magical Law Enforcement is the biggest department in the Ministry of Magic. It is located on level two of the Ministry building. In a way, all other departments are subject to it; its responsibility is to see that magical law is properly enforced in all its particularities. This means that not only courts, Hit Wizards and Aurors are under its jurisdiction, but also the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office, the Improper Use of Magic Office (OP7) and the Office for the Detection and Confiscation of Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective Objects.

Amelia Bones was head of this department until her death (HBP1). Pius Thicknesse succeeded her (DH1). After the Fall of the Ministry, he was named Minister for Magic (DH11), and Yaxley became Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement (DH12).
