Decoy Detonators

Decoy Detonators are a Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes product, used to create a diversion. Decoy Detonators resemble black horns with small legs, almost like spiders. To use the Detonator, one places it on the ground; the Detonator will then scurry off and create a loud noise far out of sight, creating a distraction (HBP6).

George Weasley gives Harry Potter a few Decoy Detonators when the latter visits Weasley's Wizard Wheezes for the first time (HBP6).

Hermione Granger packs some Decoy Detonators in her beaded bag when the Trio plans to infiltrate the Ministry of Magic to retrieve Slytherin's Locket from Dolores Umbridge (DH12). Once at the Ministry, Harry sets off a Decoy Detonator on Level One to distract the pamphlet-makers outside Umbridge's office. The Detonator gives off a loud bang and expels a large amount of smoke; in the subsequent confusion, Harry enters Umbridge's office to search for the locket. The employees believe that the Detonator has escaped from the Committee on Experimental Charms, as there have been previous incidents involving strange items created by the Committee (DH13).
