Dark Mark

The Dark Mark is Voldemort's symbol. It consists of a skull with a snake coming out of its mouth.

The incantation Morsmordre conjures a brilliant green reproduction of the Dark Mark to hover above a place where Death Eaters have killed someone.

It is conjured for the first time since the First War by Bartemius Crouch, Jr. in order to frighten the Death Eaters who were idly torturing Muggles at the Quidditch World Cup, and remind them of the true meaning of their allegiance (GF9). The Dark Mark also hovers above Hogwarts during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower (HBP27).

The Death Eaters in Voldemort's inner circle are branded with the Dark Mark on their left forearms. Voldemort can use these Marks to summon the Death Eaters to his side. On his order, the Marks change colour and cause pain until the Death Eaters obey his command. The Death Eaters' Dark Marks seem to have faded after Voldemort's fall and reappeared when he rose again.

After Voldemort's death, the Dark Mark faded to a scar, not dissimilar to the lightning scar on Harry's forehead. It didn't hurt or burn after his downfall (BLC).
