The cursed necklace is an ornate opal necklace that kills anyone who touches it.

First appearance

Harry Potter first sees it when he is hidden inside the Vanishing Cabinet at Borgin and Burkes, while observing Draco Malfoy examine the objects of the shop. A card placed underneath the necklace reads, "Caution: Do Not Touch. Cursed — Has Claimed the Lives of Nineteen Muggle Owners to Date" (CS4).

When following Draco Malfoy into Knockturn Alley, the Trio, underneath the Invisibility Cloak, waits in front of Borgin and Burkes while the Slytherin is in the store. After the boy leaves, Hermione Granger enters the shop and, trying to find out which object Draco had reserved, asks Mr. Borgin if the necklace is for sale. The shop owner replies it costs one and a half thousand Galleons. After the Gryffindor makes a few more inquiries, Mr. Borgin, getting suspicious of the girl, bluntly tells her to leave the store (HBP6).

Katie Bell

Katie Bell touches the necklace while in Hogsmeade, after the package in which it were is tore open during an argument with her friend Leanne. The Gryffindor immediately rises into the air with her arms outstreched and her eyes closed. The next moment, the girl starts to scream and opens her eyes. The Trio tries to help Leanne pull her friend back to the ground, but, when they so much as grab Katie's legs, she falls. The boys hold her and put her on the ground, where she lays writhing and yelling. Harry runs to get help, finding Rubeus Hagrid on the way to the castle. The gamekeeper takes Katie Belll to be examined by Madam Pomfrey.

Harry then realises where he had seen the necklace before and, wrapping it up with a scarf, gets it out of the tore package and makes his way back to Hogwarts with Ron and Hermione, in order to show it to Poppy. When reaching the entrance of the castle, the Trio meets Professor McGonagall, who, when seeing the object, takes it and hands it to Argus Filch, asking the caretaker to give it to Professor Snape.

While dicussing the matter with the Deputy Headmistress, Harry states he believes Draco is the one that gave it to Katie Bell in the first place, though he has no means to prove it other than the fact the saw the Slytherin at Borgin and Burkes. Professor McGonagall dismisses the accusation, arguing that Draco was not even in Hogsmeade on that same day, but in detention with her (HBP12).

Albus Dumbledore confronts Draco, during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, regarding the Slytherin's attempts to kill him, acusing the boy of trying to send him the cursed necklace. The headmaster later gets to the conclusion Draco had Madam Rosmerta under the Imperius Curse for a long time, and that she had been the one who had handed the package with the necklace to Katie Bell. Malfoy proudly confirms the whole story (HBP27).
