The Crup is a magical creature from the southeast of England and a popular pet among wizards. It resembles a Jack Russel terrier except for the fact that it has a forked tail. It is a scavenger that will eat literally anything.
Crups are most probably wizard-bred. They are very faithful pets to wizards, but aggressive towards Muggles. Therefore, wizards who want to keep a Crup have to obtain a license from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures after demonstrating that they can control their pet in the presence of Muggles. By law, Crup owners are obliged to remove their pet's conspicious tail with a painless Severing Charm while the Crup is six to eight weeks old (FBAZ).
Crups belong to the creatures that often appear in Care of Magical Creatures OWLs. Professor Grubbly-Plank mentions this to Dolores Umbridge when the latter inspects her lesson and adds that she will therefore make sure that the fifth-years can recognize them during her time as their substitute teacher for Rubeus Hagrid (OP15).
