Chickens
From UnknowableWiki
A chicken is a type of domesticated fowl that is primarily kept as a food source, both for eggs and meat (WP). When a chicken egg is hatched beneath a toad, a Basilisk will come out of it (CS16).
Following the instructions of Dragon-Breeding for Pleasure and Profit, Rubeus Hagrid feeds his newly hatched baby dragon Norbert with a mixture of brandy and chicken blood every half hour (PS15).
The Weasleys keep chickens at The Burrow. Harry Potter sees several fat brown chickens pecking in the yard when he first comes there in the summer of 1992 (CS2). On September 1, Arthur Weasley almost breaks his neck when he trips over a stray chicken as he crosses the yard carrying Ginny Weasley's trunk to the car (CS5). When Bill Weasley's fiancé Fleur stays at The Burrow in the summer of 1996, she comments to Harry that "zere isn't much to do 'ere, unless you like cooking and chickens!" (HBP5). In the summer of 1997, Molly Weasley tries to keep the Trio from talking in private and orders Harry and Ron to help Arthur look after the chickens. However, Arthur uses the chicken coop to hide Sirius Black's old motorcycle and sends the boys away. Shortly before Bill and Fleur's wedding, Harry, Ron and Hermione volunteer to feed the chickens to escape the overcrowded house and get some privacy (DH6).
On the day of Harry Potter's hearing in front of the Wizengamot, he and Arthur Weasley meet Bob, a Ministry employee who carries a cardboard box containing a fire-breathing chicken. Bob is not yet certain what kind of creature the chicken really is but he is sure that it constitutes a serious breach of the Ban on Experimental Breeding (OP7).
When the Trio is on the run from Voldemort and his followers in 1997, they take some bread and eggs from a lonely farm. Hermione leaves some money under the chicken coop (DH15).
