Characteristics

In spite of being a phenomenal flyer, Viktor Krum does not look particularly graceful on the ground. He is thin, duck-footed and hulking. His skin is sallow, he is dark-haired and hook-nosed and has thick eyebrows (GF8).

Krum looks surly and brooding and is not very talkative. When he speaks, he is often blunt. He has a thick Eastern European accent. He is very shy. Despite his unsocial attitude, he gets more (female) attention than he wishes due to his celebrity status (GF16). Viktor is very attracted to Hermione Granger (GF23). He does not approve of Karkaroff and the way he ran Durmstrang (GF37).

That he was chosen as a champion for the Triwizard Tournament demonstrates that he is a talented wizard.

The Quidditch World Cup

Viktor Krum played for the Bulgarian National Quidditch team during the Quidditch World Cup of 1994. Although he was only eighteen, he was the team's star player (GF7). In the final match against Ireland, he caught the Snitch when Ireland led by 160 points—which meant that Ireand won the Cup (GF8).

The Triwizard Tournament

Krum, along with other Durmstrang students and the Headmaster, Igor Karkaroff, went to Hogwarts in order to compete in the Triwizard Tournament of 1994/1995 (GF15). He was Karkaroff's favorite choice (suggesting he is most likely a pure-blood). The Goblet of Fire chose him to be the Triwizard champion for his school (GF16).

He knew that the first task were dragons—which proved that Karkaroff was aiding him. During the first task he pointed a spell at the dragon's eye—a strategy that Sirius was going to suggest to Harry (GF20, GF23).

He was followed by many female admirors to places including the library which annoyed Hermione. During his stay at Hogwarts, he attended the Yule Ball with Hermione Granger. This relationship made Ron jealous. Ron suggested that he was too old and that he only wanted her help for the Tournament, which appalled Hermione.

During the second task Hermione was the one that Krum had to rescue from the lake. He did a crude Transfiguration and turned his head into a shark's. He was able to rescue her, but arrived outside the time limit and received 40 points (GF26). After the event he asked Hermione to join him during the summer. He was interrupted by the belated arrival of Harry and Hermione never answered. This question was overheard by Rita Skeeter and used in an article in Witch Weekly to get back at Hermione. The article caused Krum to approach Harry about his relationship with her after they were informed about the nature of the third task. Harry assured him that they were only friends. The boys met Barty Crouch, Sr., who was in a state of mental confusion. Harry went to get help while Krum stayed with Crouch (GF28). Barty Crouch, Jr., disguised as Mad-Eye Moody, Stunned Krum and killed his father. He hid the body before Krum was found and Enervated (GF35).

During the third task Krum was put under the Imperius Curse by Barty Crouch, Jr. in order to use the Cruciatus Curse on Cedric Diggory. He was Stunned by Harry and carried out of the maze by the patrolling teachers (GF31).

At the end of the school year, Ron made peace with Viktor, who expressed his disgust at Karkaroff and mourned for Cedric Diggory (GF37).

After the Tournament

Viktor Krum remained a sore spot for Ron. He was annoyed that Hermione continued her friendship with him through letters (though platonic) (OP21). However, she never visited him in Bulgaria and their romantic relationship seems to be over. Later, when Ron learned from his sister Ginny that Hermione had kissed Viktor, he impulsively kissed Lavender Brown, after which the two dated for a few months (HBP14).

Bill and Fleur's Wedding

Viktor was a guest at Bill and Fleur's wedding. He was offended by Xenophilius Lovegood's attire; the man was wearing the sign of the Deathly Hallows, which also served as Gellert Grindelwald's sign. While still at large, Grindelwald murdered members of Viktor's family, so Krum did not appreciate that which he felt was advocating the dark wizard's horrible deeds {DH8).

Trivia

  • Krum was one of the last people that bought a wand from Gregorovitch (DH8).
  • Krum eventually found love when he was back in Bulgaria (BLC).
