Salazar Slytherin was a wizard who, along with Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Godric Gryffindor, founded the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (FW). Unbeknownst to his colleagues, he built the Chamber of Secrets with the hopes that one day, his true heir would open it and therefore release the Basilisk inside it to get rid of all the Muggle-borns in the school. He is also a Parselmouth who had control of the Basilisk living in the Chamber.

The four founders parted ways over Salazar's prejudicial view of the admittance of non-pure-blooded wizards to the school. Such was his view that he had a fight with his former friend Godric and left the school.

According to the Sorting Hat, Slytherin came from "the fen", which has led many fans to believe that it referred to the northern east of England (GF12).

The Slytherin Locket belonged to him and was carried down with the generations as a precious and valious object. The locket eventually became one of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes (HBP23) and was destroyed by Ron Weasley (DH19).

Slytherin was the wizard of the month in jkrowling.com for June of 2007. It was then disclosed that he was one of the first recorded Parselmouths, an excellent Legilimens and a "notorious champion of pure-blood supremacy" (WM).
