Ron Weasley is the best friend of Harry Potter and Hermione Granger and thus part of the Trio. He is the youngest son of Arthur and Molly Weasley and was Sorted into Gryffindor. He accompanied Harry in most of his adventures. He survived the Second War, became George Weasley's partner at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes and an Auror and married Hermione Granger. The couple has two children, Rose and Hugo.

Ron, fanart by Makani.

Ron is "tall, thin, and gangling, with freckles, big hands and feet, and a long nose" (PS6). Like the rest of his family, he has bright red hair. He seems to blush easily, and his ears go red when embarrassed.

Most of Ron's clothes are rather shabby or too small. For some reason, his mother prefers to give him maroon clothes, including the obligatory jumper for Christmas (PS12, PA11), his dress robes (GF10), socks (PA11) and his pyjamas (GF19)—a colour he detests (PS12).

On the upside, Ron is spontaneous, optimistic and easygoing. He makes light of small problems and is good at cheering others up. He has a quick mouth and is good at making smart or funny comments. Like a true Gryffindor, he is brave and direct. He will sacrifice himself for his friends and family without hesitation (PS16, CS16, PA17). Unlike Hermione, Ron has no qualms about rule-breaking and enjoys a practical joke.

On the downside, a lot of his actions and sayings seem a little thoughtless, especially where the feelings of others are concerned. He can be very sarcastic and often rude and tactless (PS10). Once his usually good mood is spoilt, he does not recover quickly or easily . Likewise, he is very unforgiving when he is angry at somebody (PA12, PA15).

Because Ron is the only one of the Trio who grew up in the wizarding world, he knows a lot of trivia about wizards and magic the others don't. He is also easily fascinated and confused by the Muggle World (PS12, PA1, PA22).

Ron is a Quidditch fan (PS6). He supports the Chudley Cannons (CS3). Like himself, this team is not the most fortunate. Ron once told Harry he would buy his own Quidditch team if he had the Philosopher's Stone (PS13). He collects Chocolate Frog cards - he had over a hundred when he started at Hogwarts but was missing Agrippa and Ptolemy (PS6).

Ron is a good Quidditch Keeper, although he suffers from nerves, which can severely inhibit his performance (OP13, OP21).

He is a particularly talented wizard chess player. He owns an old chess set that belonged to his grandfather. The figures are well adjusted to him and obey him unquestioningly (PS12).

Ron suffers from arachnophobia. Fanart by Tealin.

Ron is very self-concious of the fact that he is poor. He stands in the shadow of his older brothers and Harry and he feels it (PS6, GF18). His reflection in the Mirror of Erised shows that he longs to be famous and admired (PS12). Ron has an inferiority complex and his pride is easily wounded. Twice, this led him to abandon Harry when his best friend would have needed him most (GF17, DH15). Combined with jealousy, his complex also makes him harm Hermione (GF23, HBP14).

Ron is superstitious. He believes in omens like the Grim and was initially deeply impressed by Sybill Trelawney's dramatic predictions (PA6)—although this did not last long (PA16). He also believed the rumour that the Shrieking Shack was haunted (PA17). He is afraid of speaking and hearing Lord Voldemort's name and says You-Know-Who instead (PS6).

Ron has been mortally afraid of spiders ever since Fred turned his teddy bear into a spider when he was three (CS9). His Boggart is a big spider (PA7).

He is not particularly good at Apparition.

Relationships with other characters

Relationship with Harry

Since their first train ride, Ron and Harry have been best friends. Ron admires Harry (PS6), but he is also envious of his fame (GF18). Nevertheless, they stay close friends. As an adult, Ron works under Harry at the Auror Office.

Relationship with Hermione

Ron disliked Hermione when he first met her (PS6). He and Harry thought she was an interfering bossy know-it-all. On Halloween 1991, Hermione was deeply wounded by a particularly hurtful comment of Ron's and hid in a bathroom where she was ambushed by a mountain troll. Harry and Ron rescued her, and they became friends (PS10).

Since their first year at Hogwarts, Ron and Hermione have been constantly bickering (PS14). Ron got easily angry at Hermone and was often not talking for her for days (PA8, PA11, PA12). Yet, he also defended her in front of others on several occasions (PA8). First signs of attraction between the couple were visible as early as in their third year (PA16), and by their fourth year, Ron's jealousy at Viktor Krum was unmistakeable. Hermione finally kissed Ron during the Battle of Hogwarts (DH31). They got married at some point after the end of the Second War (DHE).

Relationship with family members

Ron loves his family, but he is often ashamed that they are poor. He also suffers from having so many older talented brothers:

"You could say I've got a lot to live up to. Bill and Charlie have already left - Bill was Head Boy and Charlie was captain of Quidditch. Now Percy's a prefect. Fred and George mess around a lot, but they still get really good marks and everyone thinks they're really funny. Everyone expects me to do as well as the others, but if I do, it's no big deal, because they did it first." - Ron on his first train ride (PS6).

Ron is named after his uncle Bilius.

He admires the twins, who take great delight in mocking him.

Ron doesn't like Mrs. Weasley's fuzzing over him. Even as a first-year, he was embarassed when she tried to rub a spot of lipstick off his nose and tried to wriggle out of her embrace (PS6). He knows it is dangerous to cross her-he turned green when he found out that she had discovered that he and the twins had used the Flying Ford Anglia to rescue Harry (CS3).

Ron never got along particularly well with Percy and accused him of being too ambitious on several occasions (CS9, PA4, PA10). He despised him when he left the family. They made up on the battlefield during the Battle of Hogwarts.

He sometimes commands Ginny around or treats her very dismissively (PA5). He watches over her and is angry at her having boyfriends (other than Harry).

Relationship with Draco, Crabbe and Goyle

At school, Ron despised Draco Malfoy who constantly mocked him and his family because they were poor (PS12, PS13, CS4, PA5, PA14). Draco could easily get Ron so riled up that he would try to attack him (PS12, PS13, CS4, CS7, PA10, PA14, PA15). When Harry tried to save Draco and his friends Crabbe and Goyle, Ron angrily shouted a him: "IF WE DIE FOR THEM, I’LL KILL YOU, HARRY!" (DH31). Although Ron's dislike of Draco is more subdued 19 years after Voldemort's defeat, some rivalry still seems to exist (DHE).

Ron often makes fun of Crabbe and Goyle for their stupidity (CS12). He transformed into Crabbe in his second year, an experience he found revolting. He was uncomfortable during the transformation and had trouble to play his part, as he had to be rude towards Percy and hear Draco insult his family (CS12).

Relationship with Hagrid

Ron was introduced to Hagrid by Harry in their first year at Hogwarts (PS8) and is a good friend of him. Although he was often exasperated by Hagrid's love for dangerous beasts, Ron always supported him when Hagrid needed help in a tight spot. For example, he fed Norberta (receiving a bite that brought him into the hospital wing, PS14), visited Aragog in spite of his fear of spiders CS14, took over the lead in preparing the defense for Buckbeak (PA6). Hagrid sometimes gave parental advice to Ron. He reminded him to be kinder and more forgiving towards Hermione once (PA14).

Relationship with Lavender

In their sixth year, Ron dated Lavender Brown. The couple had little to say to each other, their relationship was mostly physical. Ron, who had never shown any interest in Lavender before she made clear she fancied him and Ginny teased him about his lack of snogging experience, quickly became tired of her and was glad when they broke up.

Relationship with others

Ron mistrusted their new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Gilderoy Lockhart from the start-after their first lesson, he hinted that Lockhart might not really have done all the stuff he said he had. Ron also teased Hermione about her crush on him (CS6).

Ron is easily impressed by pretty women. He admired Madam Rosmerta (PA10). He also developed a crush on Fleur Delacour when she came to Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament. He still still had a soft spot for her two years later, when she was his brother Bill's fiancée. His feelings for Viktor Krum are ambivalent: he admires him as a Quidditch player but is envious of his relationship with Hermione.

Early childhood

Prior to going to Hogwarts, Ron was taught at home by Molly Weasley (WBD) and was often teased by his older brothers, especially Fred and George, who turned his teddy bear into a spider when he was three (CS9) and nearly made him make an Unbreakable Vow (HBP15). He liked to fly and nearly hit a hanglider on Charlie's old broom once (PS9).

Ron as a first-year

Arrival at Hogwarts

Ron started Hogwarts with Bill's old robes, Charlie's old wand, and Percy's old rat, Scabbers (PS6). He also had Charlie's old cauldron (OP9). Three of his brothers (Percy, Fred and Gerge) still went to school when he started. Ron felt that he had to live up to his brothers' example and was afraid he might not get into Gryffindor house (PS6). Although Ron grew up at a wizard household, he did not seem to know a lot about Hogwarts. For example, he did not know how new students were Sorted: the twins had told him he had to wrestle a troll (PS7).

Ron met Harry Potter at King's Cross Station when Harry asked Mrs. Weasley how to get to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. Mrs. Weasley introduced them and the boys spent the whole train ride together. They got along very well. Ron told Harry about many aspects of the Wizarding World, including magical sweets, Gringotts, and Quidditch. They also met Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy on the Hogwarts Express and did not like either of them.

Ron was the second last to be Sorted. He was pale green by then, but the Sorting Hat put him in Gryffindor after only a second (PS7).

Harry and Ron quickly became best friends. Together with Neville and Hermione, they had their first nightly adventure when they were out after curfew and faced Fluffy (PS9). Hermione, who had only accompanied them to reprimand them, refused to talk to them afterwards. When she adressed them again, Ron made a nasty comment. He told her not to stop not talking to them since "it's doing us so much good" (PS10). Hermione marched away with her nose held high.

Hallowe'en: the mountain troll

On Hallowe'en Ron and Hermione had to work together in Charms. Ron did not succeed at the Levitation charm they were supposed to practice and Hermione haughtily showed him how to do it. After the lesson, Ron remarked that it was no wonder nobody liked her since she was a nightmare. Hermione overheard him. She was deeply wounded and broke into tears. Ron looked uncomfortable but showed no remorse. The boys heard Parvati saying that Hermione was crying in the girl's bathroom later, and Ron now looked ashamed, but he forgot about her when the feast began. Only when Professor Quirrell reported that a mountain troll had entered the school did they remember Hermione and went to look for her. Unfortunately, they locked the troll in the bathroom Hermione was hiding in. As soon as they noticed their mistake, they confronted the troll. Using the first spell that came to his mind, Ron cried "Wingardium Leviosa" and knocked the troll out with his own club. Hermione covered up for the boys when they were found by the teachers and said that she had gone to look for the troll by herself and that Harry and Ron had saved her. The event was the foundation of the Trio's friendship (PS10).

Christmas: the Mirror of Erised

Ron stayed at Hogwarts over Christmas as his parents were visiting Charlie in Romania. He was fascinated by the 50 pence coin Harry got from the Dursleys; he had obviously never seen Muggle money before. As always, he got a maroon jumper from his mother. He was less than pleased and claimed that he hated maroon.

The night after Christmas, Harry showed Ron the Mirror of Erised. Ron saw an older version of himself, all alone, as Head Boy and Quidditch captain with the House Cup and the Quidditch Cup in his hands. The mirror had less influence over Ron than over Harry, though. When they heard voices, it was Ron who threw the Invisibility Cloak back over them and dragged Harry away. Ron also warned Harry that the mirror had a bad influence on him when his best friend became rest- and listless (PS12).

Harry, Ron and Hermione were the only ones to whom Hagrid showed his baby dragon Norberta (mistaken for a male and called "Norbert" by him), although Draco spied on them and saw the dragon hatch. They were able to persuade Hagrid to send Norberta to Ron's brother Charlie. Norberta bit Ron into his right hand when he helped feeding the dragon. The wound got badly infected and Ron had to visit Madam Pomfrey. Draco visited him there and found Charlie's letter, which contained the plan to get rid of Norberta. Ron told this to Harry and Hermione, but they decided it was too late to switch plans. They brought Norberta to the Astronomy Tower while Ron slept in the hospital wing (PS14). Ron was the only one who stood by them and Neville when they lost 150 points for being caught out after curfew (PS15).

The Philosopher's Stone

When Harry decided to look for the Philosopher's Stone, Ron immediately made clear that he and Hermione would accompany him. After they had got past Fluffy, Sprout's Devil's Snare and Flitwick's locked door and keys, Ron got Harry and Hermione safely through McGonagall's giant chess board. He told Harry to replace a black bishop and Hermione to become the castle next to him. He himself took the place of a knight. Ron decided on all the moves of the black pieces. He sacrificed himself so that the game would be won and Harry and Hermione could go on. He was hit over the head by the white queen and knocked out (PS16). Hermione brought him out when she got back and the two went to the owlery to contact Dumbledore. However, they met the headmaster in the Entrance Hall.

Ron was awarded fifty points for "the best-played game of chess Hogwarts has seen in many years" at the end-of-term feast. He passed his exams with good marks (PS17).

Ron as a second-year

Summer holidays

Ron wrote to Harry during the summer holidays. When Harry didn't answer the letters because Dobby intercepted them, Ron and the twins took Mr. Weasley's Flying Ford Anglia to rescue him in the middle of the night. They were able to remove the bars from Harry's window and get him out of Number Four, Privet Drive before Uncle Vernon could stop them (CS3). They flew back to The Burrow where they were discovered by Mrs. Weasley, who was very angry at their adventure. Harry slept in Ron's room.

The Flying Ford Anglia

Ron and Harry were unable to get through the barrier to enter Platform Nine and Three-Quarters because Dobby had sealed it. Ron suggested that they fly Mr. Weasley's car to Hogwarts. They loaded their luggage into the car and Ron sat down in the driver's seat. He used the Invisibility Booster and flew the car up into the sky. The Invisibility Booster quickly stopped working. To hide them from Muggle eyes, Ron flew higher until they were above the clouds. They followed the Hogwarts Express to Scotland. The car became tired in the end and reached Hogwarts with a last effort. It crashed right into the Whomping Willow. Ron's wand broke in the crash. The willow started to lash out at the car and Ron ordered it to go backwards. The car made a last jump away from the tree, threw the boys and their luggage out and disappeaed into the Forbidden Forest, followed by Ron's cries: "Come back! Dad'll kill me!" (CS5). The boys went up to the castle and caught a glimpse of the Sorting through the windows. They were caught by Snape, who brought them to his office and fetched McGonagall and Dumbledore. Against Snape's will (and their own expectations), the boys were not expelled, but they got detention (CS5) and Mrs. Weasley sent Ron a Howler the next morning (CS6).

Ron tried to patch up his wand with Spellotape (CS6), but it had become uncontrollable-when Draco insulted Hermione as a Mudblood, Ron tried to curse him but the wand backfired and Ron threw up slugs for several hours. He had to serve his detention with Filch the same evening. He had to clean the Trophy Room without magic and accidentally belched slugs over Tom Riddle's Special Award for Services to the School (CS7).

Hallowe'en: the first Petrification

On Hallowe'en, the Trio attended Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington's deathday party. On their way back to the Great Hall, Harry heard the Basilisk's voice from inside the walls and Ron and Hermione followed him to the second floor, where they found the petrified Mrs. Norris. Ron urged the others to run away, but the Halloween feast ended at that moment and they were surrounded by other students and staff members before they could escape (CS8). They returned to the site of crime later, questioned Moaning Myrtle in her bathroom, and were caught by Percy, who accused Ron of making himself suspicious. Ron got angry and told Percy that he was only concerend about diminishing his chances of becoming Head Boy, for which Percy took five points off from Gryffindor (CS9).

Christmas: The Polyjuice Potion

Ron was the first to suspect Draco Malfoy as the Heir of Slytherin (CS9). Hermione caught on to this theory and the Trio decided to brew the Polyjuice Potion in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom, although Ron suggested to Harry that "it'll be a lot less hassle if you can just knock Malfoy off his broom" (CS10). The potion was ready on Christmas. Ron gave Harry a book called "Flying with the Cannons". After the feast, the boys drugged Crabbe and Goyle with cakes filled with a Sleeping Draught. They took their shoes and some hair and hid them in a closet. Back in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom, Ron transformed into Crabbe and Harry into Goyle. However, Hermione had accidentally transformed into a cat and the boys had to leave her behind.

Ron and Harry managed to find the Slytherin common room, but the information Draco gave them was not satisfactory: He showed Ron a newspaper article saying Mr. Weasley had been fined 50 Galleons for bewitching a car. Ron had to pretend he had a stomach ache to cover up his lack of amusement. Malfoy also admitted that he had no idea who the heir of Slytherin was. Finally, Ron's hair turned red again and he began to transform back. Harry and Ron quickly ran out of the common room, pretending to need to go to the hospital wing. Ron's only consolation was that Malfoy had told them where his father hid secret stuff at Malfoy Manor, an information that he passed on to his dad (CS12).

The Diary

Ron and Harry discovered Tom Riddle's diary in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. Ron warned Harry not to pick it up, but Harry took it nevertheless. Ron recognised Riddle's name from the award he had cleaned in the Trophy Room. However, he did not think the book possessed any hidden powers. Ron unconciously hit very near the mark when the Trio wondered what Riddle had won his award for:

"Maybe he murdered Myrtle, that would've done everyone a favour..." (CS13).

When Harry told the others what Tom had shown him, Ron compared Riddle to Percy and said he had no right to "grass on" Hagrid (CS14).

Hermione's Petrification, Hagrid's arrest and the visit to Aragog

Both Harry and Ron were shocked at Hermione's Petrification. They went to confront Hagrid, but he was arrested and Dumbledore suspended before he could answer their questions. He gave them a hint to "follow the spiders" before he left for Azkaban (CS14). In spite of Ron's fear of spiders, the boys took his advice and stole out of the castle at night to follow a couple of spiders into the Forbidden Forest, accompanied by Fang. They met the Flying Ford Anglia that had turned wild and now lived in the Forest on its own. While they were still admiring the car, they were attacked and carried away by Acromantula. The giant spiders brought them to their ancestor Aragog's lair. Aragog told them tha Hagrid had been expelled because of him but that he had never attacked a human out of respect for his owner. He knew what beast the Chamber contained but did not dae to name it. He also said that the last victim was found in a bathroom. Aragog and his clan wanted to kill and eat Harry and Ron, but they escaped with the help of the Flying Ford Anglia. Back in their dormitory, Ron collapsed onto his bed and fell asleep. Harry woke him when he figured out that Myrtle must have been the monster's last victim (CS15).

Ginny came to Ron the next day at breakfast to confess her anxiety that she had something to do with the attacks, but Percy interrupted them.

The Chamber of Secrets

Later that day, Harry and Ron managed to talk Lockhart into leaving them early when he escorted them to their next class and wanted to slip into Myrtle's bathroom to question her about her death. McGonagall caught them and Harry lied that they had wanted to visit Hermione. McGonagall gave them permission to see her. Harry noticed a piece of paper in Hermione's hand. It was a book page about Basilisks on which Hermione had scribbled "pipes". Thus, Ron and Harry finally figured out what the monster was and that it moved through the school by using the plumbing system. They went to the staff room to inform the teachers of their discovery, but at this moment, McGonagall made an announcement that all students were to go to their dormitories immediately. Harry and Ron hid in a closet in the staff room. They heard that Ginny had been captured and taken into the Chamber and that the other teachers told Lockhart to rescue her.

The boys went to Lockhart's office, where they found their professor on the verge of running away. Lockhart admitted that he had not done any heroic deeds and that he had Obliviated people after stealing their stories. When he tried to Obliviate Harry and Ron, Harry disarmed him and Ron chucked the wand out of the window. They then forced Lockhart to accompany them to Myrtle's bathroom.Harry opened the entrance to the Chamber and they slid down a pipe. Deep under the school, Lockhart made a last attempt to flee: he dived at Ron and took his wand, but when he tried to ast a Memory Charm, Ron's broken wand backfired. There was a small explosion and the tunnel ceiling broke in. Harry got separated from Ron and Lockhart, who had lost his memory (CS16).

Ron stayed with Lockhart and shifted enough rocks to open a passage to the rest of the tunnel. He was overjoyed when Harry brought Ginny back alive. Harry, Ron, Ginny and Lockhart were lifted back up to Moaning Myrtle's bathroom by Fawkes (CS17). The phoenix led them to Minerva McGonagall's office, where Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall and Mr. and Mrs. Weasley awaited them. Harry told them all that had happened. Then Ginny, Molly and Arthur left for the hospital wing and McGonagall went to prepare a feast. Dumbledore awarded Ron and Harry 200 points and a Special Award for Services to the School apiece and then asked Ron to lead Lockhart to the hospital wing so that he could talk to Harry alone.

Harry gave Ron his phone number on the train back to London (CS18).

Ron as a third-year

Summer holidays

Ron tried to call Harry at the beginning of he holidays. Vernon answered the phone. Ron, who had never used a telephone before, made the mistake of yelling into the receiver that he was a friend of Harry's from school. Vernon held the receiver at arm's length and yelled back, telling him that there he did not know Harry and that he should never call again. Shortly afterwards, Mr. Weasley won the Daily Prophet Grand Prize Galleon Draw an the family used the money to visit Bill in Egypt. Ron sent Harry a Sneakoscope for his birthday from there (PA1).

Back in England, Ron learned from his dad that Harry hd blown up his aunt and was now staying at the Leaky Cauldron. He and his family came there on the last day of the holidays, accompanied by Hermione. Ron got a new wand at Ollivander's. He was worried about Scabbers, who looked thin. In reality, the disguised Peter Pettigrew was frightened because of the escape of Sirius Black. Ron bought him some rat tonic at the Magical Menagerie, where they met Crookshanks, who attacked Scabbers. Ron immediately disliked the cat (PA4). He and Hermione quarreled over Crookshanks several times over the school year (PA8, PA11).

The journey to Hogwarts and the first days of school

The Trio occupied the last compartment on the Howarts Express, which was empty except for their new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor Remus Lupin, who was asleep. Harry told Ron and Hermione that Sirius Black was chasing him. Ron was shocked at this information. The train stopped unexpectedly and the lights went out. Ron peered out of the widow and saw figures getting on board. Neville and Ginny entered the compartment. Lupin woke up and made some light. The compartment door slid open and a Dementor entered. Ron watched Harry twitch and collapse. He himself was not affected too badly, he only felt like he would never be cheerful again. This indicates that he did not have many bad memories. Lupin conjured a Patronus and banished the Dementor (PA5).

Ron was deeply impressed when Professor Trelawney saw a Grim in Harry's tea leaves in their first Divination class and positively frightened when Harry admitted he had seen a big black dog recently. Hermione mocked him and they did not talk to each other for a couple of hours. The Trio was very worried that Draco Malfoy would get Hagrid into trouble after he was attacked by Buckbeak (PA6).

Ron quickly noticed that Hermione was behaving oddly and that her schedule was far too full. However, neither he nor Harry discovered that she was using a Time-Turner. Ron called Professor Lupin's first class the best Defence Against the Dark Arts class they had ever had (PA7).

Ron and Hermione both stayed at Hogwarts over Christmas to keep Harry company. Ron said he couldn't stand two weeks with Percy (PA10).

Ron and Hermione went to Hogsmeade without Harry, as he didn't havw the onsent of a guardian. Ron nearly dropped the jar of Cockroach Clusters he was holding when Harry revealed his presence inside Honeydukes. He was outraged that Fred and George had given the Marauder's Map to Harry instead of him. He made light of the danger of Harry coming to Hogsmeade in spite of Sirius Black. At the Three Broomsticks, the Trio overheard Rosmerta, Hagrid, Flitwick, Fudge and McGonagall talking about Sirius Black. They learned that Sirius had been James Potter's best friend and that he had betrayed the Potters (PA10. Ron did not know how to react to the news and kept watching Harry nervously all through dinner. He later tried to talk to him in their dorm, but Harry pretended to be asleep. Later, Hermione and Ron tried to discourage Harry from going after Black by himself, but they did not get through to him. Finally, Ron changed the topic and suggested visiting Hagrid.

They found Hagrid devastated: Buckbeak had to attend a hearing at the Ministry. The Trio tried to comfort him, to no avail. Finally, Ron made tea, saying that his was what his mother always did when somebody was upset. The Trio spent the next days in the library, trying to help Hagrid prepare Buckbeak's defense.

Ron was enthusiastic when Harry got a Firebolt for Christmas. Both boys stopped talking to Hermione when she told McGonagall about the broom and the Professor confiscated it (PA11).

Quarrel with Hermione

Just when Harry and Ron were about to make up with Hermione, Scabbers vanished and Ron found blood on his sheets and ginger cat hairs on the floor. He accused Crookshanks of Scabbers' death and the two had their worst fight yet (PA12). Ron was devastated at the loss of his pet. He did not talk to Hermione for several weeks and said that he would only make up with her if she showed remorse (PA13).

Sirius attacks

The night after the Quidditch match against Ravenclaw, Sirius Black entered Gryffindor tower to find and kill Peter Pettigrew, disguised as Scabbers. He slashed the hangings of Ron's four-poster bed with a knife. Ron woke up, saw Black leaning over him and screamed. Black turned and ran. Soon the whole house was in an uproar, especially after Sir Cadogan confirmed Ron's story to Professor McGonagall (PS13). Ron instantly became famous and savoured the attention he got.

The Saturday after the attack, Hagrid had a serious talk with Ron and Harry in which he advised them to make up with Hermione who was devastated because of how Ron was treating her (PA14).

Hogsmeade visit

In spite of Hermione's prostests Ron encouraged Harry to visit Hogsmeade again. Harry went under the Invisibility Cloak. Unfortunately, the cloak slipped when Harry and Ron were playing a trick on Malfoy near the Shrieking Shack. Harry hurried back to the school. Ron too returned to Hogwarts and found Harry in Snape's office with Snape and Lupin. He claimed that he had given Harry the Hogsmeade goods and the Marauder's Map Snape had found in the boy's pockets. Lupin concluded that this closed the case and helped the boys escape from Snape. However, he confiscated the Map. Ron apologised to Harry for convincing him to visit Hogsmeade (PA14).

Making up with Hermione

Harry and Ron met Hermione on their way back to the common room. Ron, who thought that she had come to censure them for their foolhardiness, lashed out at her, but Hermione told them that Hagrid had lost his case and that Buckbeak was going to be executed (PA14). Hermione saw no hope for the final appeal. Ron encouraged her, saying that he would help her and Hagrid to prepare for the appeal. Hermione broke into tears and flung herself into Ron's arms. He awkwardly patted her on the head. Hermione told him she was sorry about Scabbers and Ron conceded that Scabbers had been old and useless.

He was deeply impressed when Hermione hit Malfoy after he had made fun of Hagrid's despair. When she missed Charms the same day, he immediately noticed her absence and worried whether Malfoy had done something to her. He was deeply awed when she walked out of Divination in the afternoon (PA15).

Ron now took over the lead in the preparation for Buckbeak's appeal, putting all of his energy into the task and displaying a fierce confidence that it would be successful (PA15). He treated Hermione a lot more carefully than before their fight, as she had a very short temper due to the impending exams (PA16).

Buckbeak's execution

Ron did well on his Defence Against the Dark Arts exam until he was misled by a Hinkypunk. The Trio met Cornelius Fudge after the exam. The Minister told Harry that he had come to oversee Buckbeak's execution. Astonished, Ron interrupted the conversation to ask whether the appeal was already over. When Fudge denied this, Ron told the started man that maybe the execution would not be necessary. At this moment, they were joined by the executioner Walden Macnair and a very old representative of the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures. Ron wanted to say something at the sight of Macnair's axe, but Hermione stopped him, reminding him that Fudge was his dad's boss. For the first time, Ron seemed to lose his optimism that Buckbeak would be cleared.

while Harry had his Divination exam and heard Professor Trelawney's prediction that Voldemort would regain his servant, Ron and Hermione received Hagrid's note that Buckbeak had lost his appeal and would be executed at sunset. Since they were not allowed to leave the school, Hermione went to fetch Harry's Invisibility Cloak, astonishing Ron again. She looked flattered when he told her so.

They went to see Hagrid, who was visibly shaken, after dinner. Hermione found Scabbers hiding in one of Hagrid's milk jugs. He was frantic and in a terrible state. Ron tried to calm him and stuffed him into his pocket before Hagrid shoed them out because the execution committee was coming. Ron stopped on their way back to the castle because Scabbers was desparately trying to escape again. While he was fighting with the rat, they could hear raised voices and the thud of an axe from Hagrid's hut (PA16). Ron turned paper-white and his teeth started to chatter. They slowly went on, Scabbers still fighting. The rat finally managed to escape when he saw Crookshanks approaching. Crookshanks immediately ran after him and Ron threw the Cloak off to follow them. He was able to catch Scabbers and stuffed him securely into his pocket again. Right then, Sirius attacked in his Animagus form; he pushed Harry aside, caught Ron's arm in his mouth and dragged him into the tunnel under the Whomping Willow (PA17).

In the Shrieking Shack

In an effort to stop Sirius from pulling him into the tunnel, Ron hooked one leg around a tree root, but Sirius pulled so hard that the leg broke wit a loud crack and he dragged the boy into the Shrieking Shack. Here, he transformed back and Ron discovered that the supposed dog was in fact the criminal Sirius Black. Sirius took the boy's wand and hid behind the door. Ron was in so much pain that he could not warn Hermione and Harry in time when they followed Crookshanks into the Shack—before he had explained that they were trapped, Sirius had closed the door and disarmed them.

Ron and Hermione held Harry back when he wanted to jump at Sirius. Swaying and white, Ron told Sirius that if he wanted to kill Harry, he would have to kill them all. Sirius replied that he should lie down and that there would be only one murder. Harry threw himself at him, followed by Hermione and Ron, who managed to disarm Sirius. Harry got his wand and told the others to get out of the way. Ron collapsed on the bed. Before Harry culd do anything to Sirius, Lupin burst in and disarmed the Trio. He asked Sirius where "he" (meaning Peter Pettigrew) was, and Sirius pointed at Ron. Realizing that Sirius and Peter must have switched for Secret Keeper, Lupin embraced his old friend. Furious, Hermione revealed that Lupin was a werewolf. Lupin gave the Trio back their wands and offered to explain everything. He told them that he had seen somebody else with Ron on the map and asked to have a look at Scabbers. Ron handed him over, asking what a rat had to do with everything, to which Sirius replied that this was not a rat but the Animagus Peter Pettigrew (PA17). Ron voiced his conviction that that both men were mental and tried to leave. Lupin told him to stay and hear them out. Ron yelled at Lupin furiously because he continued to call the rat Peter. Scabbers fought Ron until he overbalanced and Harry pushed him back onto the bed.

Just when Lupin wanted to continue his story, Snape entered the room under Harry's Invisibility Cloak. Ron declared that the Shack was haunted on the sight of the door opening seemigly by itself, but Lupin declared that the sounds that had given the Shack its name were coming from him during his transformations. He went on to explain that his friends Sirius, Peter and James Potter had become Animagi to support him and told the Trio about the prank Sirius had played on Snape, who chose this moment to reveal his presence (PA18).

Snape threatened to hand over Sirius to the Dementors before he could make a testimony. Harry, Ron and Hermione all tried to disarm Snape at the same time; the impact of the three spells threw him against the wall, rendering him unconcious.

Once again, Lupin asked for Peter. Ron just clutched the rat closer to himself, still unwilling to believe the men's story, and asked how Sirius knew that Scabbers was indeed Peter Pettigrew. Sirius explained that he had recognised Peter on the photograph of the Weasley family in the Daily Prophet and went on to explain that Peter had secretly replaced himself as the Potters' Secret Keeper. After Lupin had convinced him that they would do nothing to Scabbers if he really was just a rat, Ron reluctantly handed him over. Together, Lupin and Sirius forced Peter back into his human form.

Pettigrew appealed for mercy to everyone in turn. When he came to Ron, claiming what a good pet he had been, the boy was revolted and moved out of his reach. Remus and Sirius tried to kill Pettigrew, but Harry threw himself in front of him, asking to let him be sent to Azkaban instead.

The party prepared to move back to the castle grounds. Lupin bandaged Ron's leg and Sirius chained Lupin and Ron, who looked as he regarded Scabbers' true identity as a personal insult, to Peter Pettigrew (PA19).

Full moon

Ron, Lupin and Pettigrew were the first to follow Crookshanks into the tunnel. They had to turn sideways. Crookshanks pressed his paw to the knot at the Whomping Willow and they could move out unhindered. Just when they were all outside, a cloud shifted and revealed the full moon. Lupin went rigid, causing Ron and Pettigrew to stop. He started to transform. Sirius changed into his Animagus form to control the werewolf, who was still tied to Ron and Pettigrew. The wolf wrenched itself free and Sirius seized it and pulled it away. At this moment, Pettigrew snatched Lupin's wand and hexed Ron and Crookshanks. Harry managed to disarm him, but he had already transformed into a rat and ran off. Sirius followed him after the wolf had taken flight into the Forbidden Forest. Ron's eyes were half open and he was breathing, but gave no other sign of conciousness. Harry and Hermione left him when they heard Sirius yelp in pain in the distance (PA20).

Shortly afterwards, Snape awoke from his unconciousness. He conjured a stretchers and brought Ron, Hermione, Sirius and Harry back to the castle (PA21. Ron awoke in the hospital wing afte Hermione and Harry had rescued Sirius and Buckbeak (PA22).

End of the school year

Ron passed all his subjects. He held a slight grudge at Hermione for not telling them about her Time Turner. To cheer him up on the train, Ron invited Harry to the Burrow and said he would call him now that he knew how to use a "fellytone" (PA22). He also mentioned that his dad could probably get tickets for the Quidditch World Cup. The Trio played Exploding Snap and had a large lunch from the trolley. Late in the afternoon, a tiny owl brought a letter from Sirius to their train compartment. It immediately began to nibble at Ron's finger while they read the letter. In a PS, Sirius told Ron that he could keep the tiny owl since it was his fault that he no longer had a pet. Ron's eyes widened, but before he accepted the owl, he let Crookshanks have a good look at it, to check whether it really was just an owl. When Crookshanks purred, he accepted it happily (PA22).
