Childhood

Influenced and encouraged by his mother, an enthusiastic Hippogriff breeder, Newt has been fascinated with magical creatures since his boyhood (FBa). At the age of seven, he spent hours dismembering Horklumps (FBi).

He attended Hogwarts, starting either in 1908 or 1909, depending on whether he was born before or after September 1.

Work for the Ministry

After graduating from Hogwarts in 1915 or 1916, he joined the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures at the Ministry of Magic. He spent his first two years, which he describes as "tedious in the extreme", at the Office for House-Elf Relocation. He was then transferred to the Beast Division, where he made a fast career due to his knowledge of bizarre beasts (FBa).

In his work for the Ministry, Newt was the major head behind the creation of the Werewolf Registry in 1947 and the Ban on Experimental Breeding issued in 1965, which is the achievement he says he is proudest of. He also worked for the Dragon Research and Restraint Bureau. During his many research trips abroad for said bureau, he collected much of the information for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. In 1979, Newt Scamander was awarded the Order of Merlin, Second Class for his services to the science of Magizoology.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

In 1918, Newt Scamander was approached by Augustus Worme of Obscurus Books, who commissioned him to write a compendium of magical creatures. At this time, Scamander was still a low-ranking employee with a meagre salary of two Sickles a week. The first edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was published in 1927 and the book, which is now in its 52nd edition, became a worldwide best-seller. His research for the book has led Scamander to travel over a hundred countries on five continents to study magical creatures in their natural habitat (FBi).

In the 1990s, Newt agreed to the release of a special edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them available to Muggles and asked Albus Dumbledore to write the foreword. He also gave permission for the edition to be covered with the notes of Harry Potter and his friends (FBf).

Personal life

Newt Scamander lives in Dorset with his wife Porpentina and their three pet Kneazles Hoppy, Milly and Mauler. He is retired from his job at the Ministry (FBa), but is still active as a Magizoologist. He currently studies Fire Slugs in the Brazilian rainforest (FW). His grandson, Rolf Scamander, who is also a wizarding naturalist, is married to Luna Lovegood (BLC).
