Marvolo Gaunt was the very epitome of Slytherin, and unsurprisingly, one of his last descendents. As typical of most Pure-blood families, initially, the Gaunt family was extremely wealthy - even more so by their relations to the Hogwarts Founder. However, their irrational mentality, along with excessive spending (the family revered grandeur ) meant that the family legacy had been squandered; the last of their opulence was exhausted far before Marvolo’s birth. Thus, the last generations lived in a cesspit outside Little Hangleton, and completely destitute. Marvolo treasured last of his inheritance – a ring engraved with the Peverell coat of arms and Slytherin’s locket – and guarded both rather feverishly.
