Mr. Lupin is Remus' father. Either he or his wife was a Muggle or Muggle-born, for Remus is a half-blood.

Mr. Lupin offended Fenrir Greyback one day, and for this reason the werewolf attacked young Remus on the full moon. The reason for this attack was never revealed to the boy; the very identity of Greyback was a secret for many years (HBP16).
