Character:Frank Longbottom

Frank Longbottom is the husband of Alice, father of Neville and son of Augusta Longbottom. Both he and Alice were members of the Order of the Phoenix during the First War (OP9).

He was a well-known and well-liked Auror and, when Lord Voldemort disappeared, four Death Eaters (Barty Crouch, Jr., Bellatrix, Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange) tortured him in order to find out the whereabouts of the Dark Lord. When that produced no results, they turned to Alice, and tortured her as well. Since that time, the couple is confined to St. Mungo's (GF30). They are unable to recognise their son Neville, who visits them often (IME, OP23).

Frank was a formidable wizard. Neville inherited his father's wand—which he broke at the Battle of the Department of Mysteries (OP35)—, and is constantly reprimanded by his grandmother Augusta for not being as talented as the Auror. Augusta finally acknowledged her grandson's talent when he led a rebel underground movement against the dark regime of Severus Snape at Hogwarts (DH29, DH31).
