The Fat Lady is the portrait that guards the entrance to the Gryffindor common room. She wears a pink silk dress. Students who know the correct password are allowed inside when she swings her painting forward.
Her best friend is Violet, a portrait that hangs near the entrance to the Great Hall (GF17). The two often get drunk at Christmas (GF23 and HBP17).
The Fat Lady is a rather temperemental woman; she often chides students for being out late, or for waking her up.
When Sirius Black attempted to enter the common room and was not able to do so, he slashed the Fat Lady's portrait in fury (PA8). Ashamed, she fled, only to be found days later hiding in a map of Argyllshire on the second floor. Sir Cadogan replaced her while the Fat Lady's portrait was repaired and she was calmed down (PA9).
Molly Weasley mentioned that the Fat Lady was already there in her time (GF31).
