Cormac McLaggen is a Gryffindor, one year older than the Trio.
McLaggen was selected by Horace Slughorn to be part of the Slug Club, as his uncle Tiberius had been before him. Slughorn likes him, due to Cormac's many connections with influential people, among which Rufus Scrimgeour (HBP7).
Hermione went to Slughorn's party with McLaggen; he bored her by speaking only of Quidditch (HBP15).
Cormac tried out for the position of Keeper in the Gryffindor Quidditch team, but Hermione Confunded him so that Ron Weasley could get the position (HBP11). He replaced Ron after the latter got poisoned, and accidentally threw a Bludger in the direction of Harry Potter's head in the middle of a Quidditch match (HBP19).
