The Bloody Baron is the Slytherin House ghost. His appearance is quite frightening: he has gaping eyes, a gaunt face, and his robes are stained with silver blood (PS7).
The Bloody Baron is the only person at Hogwarts who can control Peeves. Sometimes even mentioning his name is enough to scare the poltergeist off (PS7). Harry Potter once got rid of Peeves by pretending to be the Bloody Baron. He spoke in a low raspy voice while under the Invisibility Cloak (PS16). Thus, Peeves obviously believes that the Bloody Baron can turn himself invisible; however, we do not know whether this assumption is correct.
His favourite pastime is groaning and clanking up at the Astronomy Tower (HBP23).
The Bloody Baron has a great deal of House pride; before Harry's arrival at Hogwarts, Slytherin had won the House Cup for six years in a row, and the Baron had become "unbearable," according to Nearly Headless Nick (PS7).
When he was alive, the Bloody Baron was in love with Helena Ravenclaw. When she ran away from home with her mother's diadem, he pursued her, killed her, and then killed himself in grief (DH31). Helena became the Ravenclaw House ghost, known as the Grey Lady.
