Character:Bertha Jorkins

Bertha Jorkins was a nosy Hogwarts student (GF30), a few years older than the Marauders. According to Sirius Black, she loved gossip and had an excellent memory (GF27).

At some point in her career, Bertha went to visit the Crouches' home and overheard enough to conclude that Barty Crouch, Jr. had been somehow released from Azkaban. This forced Barty Crouch, Sr. to Obliviate her, strongly damaging her memory.

She worked at the Ministry of Magic, being sent from department to department until she ended up at the Department of Magical Games and Sports. When she went to Albania on vacation and eventually went missing, however, her boss Ludo Bagman appeared unconcerned and certain that she would eventually turn up.

There she met Peter Pettigrew, who, in a stroke of genius, brought her to Lord Voldemort (GF33). The Dark Lord tortured Bertha for information, from which he deduced Bartemius Crouch, Sr.'s ruse.

The counter-charms Voldemort had to use were far too strong, causing severe damage to her brain. She was killed, and her ghost-like form appeared as one of the victims sprouting from Voldemort's wand as a result of the Priori Incantatem effect (GF34).
