Augustus Rookwood is a Death Eater and a former Unspeakable. Igor Karkaroff revealed Rookwood's true allegiances to the Wizengamot in exchange for freedom (GF30).

Ludo Bagman was subsequently brought to trial for passing on information to Rookwood, but he was freed by claims of having known nothing of the man's status as a Death Eater.

Augustus broke out from Azkaban with eight other Death Eaters (OP25).

Algernon Rookwood spelling mistake

In the first Bloomsbury edition of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Rookwood's first name is misspelled as "Algernon" (OP25). This mistake was corrected in later editions.
