Albus Severus Potter is the middle child of Harry and Ginny Potter. He was named after Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape, two men his father greatly admired. Among the Potter children, Albus is the one who most closely resembles Harry; he is the only one who has his grandmother Lily's eyes.

Albus is often the subject of his brother James' teasing. They seem to fight constantly; when James volunteered to share a room with his brother so that Teddy Lupin could live with them, Harry refused to consider this, saying, "You and Al will share a room in the day I want the house demolished."

On September 1, 2017, Albus went to King's Cross station with his parents and siblings. Harry and Ginny pushed the boys' trolleys, on top of which there were owl cages. In the car on the way to King's Cross, Albus and his brother had been arguing about which House he would be Sorted into later that day; they resumed the argument moments before crossing the barrier between platforms nine and ten. James kept teasing Albus with the possibility that he would be placed in Slytherin, a possibility that greatly displeased the young boy.

As they approached Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, James took his trolley from Ginny and crossed the barrier. Albus took advantage of his disappearance to ask his parents whether they would write to him. Ginny promised to do so every day, if he so wished; Albus pointed out that, according to James, Hogwarts students only received letters from home once a month. Ginny replied that she and Harry had written thrice a week to James the previous year. Harry recommended that Albus should not take everything James said about Hogwarts.

After crossing the barrier, Albus was anxious to find Ron, Hermione, Rose and Hugo Weasley. He was relieved to see them, and Rose—who was also starting Hogwarts that year—beamed at him. Ron and Harry lifted Albus's luggage onto the Hogwarts Express; when they rejoined the children, Lily and Hugo were having an argument about which House they would be Sorted into in the future. Ron joked that they would disinherit the children if they were not Gryffindors, and the conversation sobered up Albus and Rose.

Moments later, James—who had reappeared to gossip that he had caught Teddy Lupin and Victoire Weasley snogging—vented his frustration at Ginny's antiques by kicking Albus. Before saying goodbye, James recommended that he should watch out for the Thestrals, and Albus panicked, asking his brother to confirm that the creatures were invisible. James only laughed, and boarded the train.

Harry reassured his son, pointing out that Thestrals were gentle creatures; in any case, the boy would take the boat that year, not the carriages. Ginny kissed Albus goodbye, mentioning that he would return home for Christmas. Harry gave him some last-minute advice, including a reminder of an invitation to Hagrid's for tea the following Friday, a recommendation not to mess with Peeves and not to duel with anyone until he had learned enough to do so. Finally, Harry advised Albus not to let James annoy him.

At the last minute before leaving, Albus panicked, and whispered to his father, "What if I'm in Slytherin?"

Harry understood his fears, and crouched down to look at him in the face. Ginny pretended to be waving to the children in the train to let father and son have a quick conversation. Harry told Albus Severus that one of his namesakes had been a very brave Slytherin; he also said that Albus's house placement did not matter to him and Ginny. However, if the possibility bothered Albus that much, he would of course be able to choose Gryffindor over Slytherin (DHE), like his father had (PS7). Like Harry's other children, Albus did not know this detail about his father's Sorting.

Noticing that the Hogwarts Express was about to leave, Albus jumped onto the train, and Ginny closed the door behind him. He and Rose noticed that several people in the platform were staring at Harry, and demanded to know why; Ron assured them that he, Ron, was extremely famous (DHE).
