The Triwizard Tournament is an old competition between Hogwarts, Durmstrang and Beauxbatons, reputed to be the three best wizarding schools in Europe. It was discontinued for a long time due to the increasing amount of champions' deaths (GF12).

One champion competes representing each school. The names of the three champions are chosen by an impartial judge: the Goblet of Fire (GF16).

Past editions

1994 edition

The 1994 edition of the Triwizard Tournament was organised by the British Ministry of Magic—notably the Department of Magical Games and Sports and the Department of International Magical Co-operation (GF7).

The four dragons used in the first task and the sphinx in the third task maze were imported shortly before the Tournament began. The Muggle Prime Minister was notified of this, as Magical Law requires (HBP1).

First task

The first task constituted of four dragons, which the champions had to overcome in order to steal a Golden Egg (GF20).

Second task

The second task of the Tournament required each champion to enter the Great Lake and rescue the person dearest to him or her from the selkies. Fleur's hostage was her sister Gabrielle; Krum's was Hermione Granger; Cedric's was his girlfriend Cho Chang. Harry had to rescue Ron Weasley (GF26).

Third task

The third task involved a maze built over the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch. This maze had several magical perils and traps, including a Boggart and a huge Blast-Ended Skrewt. The Triwizard Cup was placed at the center of the maze, and the first champion to reach it would be declared the winner of the Triwizard Tournament (GF31).
