Ship names are an old tradition in most fandoms. Ships in the Harry Potter fandom are commonly referred to by using a slash between two names (e.g. Remus/Sirius) or their first initials (e.g. R/S); in order to prevent ambiguities, the second initial is sometimes added (e.g. RL/SB). When Hermione Granger is involved in the ship, her name is often abbreviated to 'Hr.'

However, at times forming a portmantau with the two names in question becomes commonplace; Dramione (Draco/Hermione) is one such example. Portmanteaus referring to the type of relationship of the ship participants can also be used—notably Weasleycest (WP).

In addition to the names mentioned above, other ship names have appeared in the fandom for various reasons, including canon incidents, fandom events, movie scenes, fanfiction and fanon clichés. One such reason is a Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban scene in which Harry and Hermione lurk behind Hagrid's enormous pumpkin patch before freeing Buckbeak. The characters' proximity in this scene has inspired the name Pumpkin Pie, often used to refer to the Harry/Hermione ship.

Ship names are often preceded by 'H.M.S.' or 'S.S..'

SCUSA

Fiction Alley Park users, in particular, have a long-standing tradition of adopting curious ship names as post titles in their SCUSA section.

SCUSA (an abbreviation that stands for 'Self-Contained Underwater Shipping Apparatus) is the shipping section of the Fiction Alley forums. There are threads devoted to hundreds of ships, however unlikely they may seem in the books.

Few SCUSA names have achieved strong popularity and appreciation outside of Fiction Alley Park, but they are all listed in this category.
