A quill is a writing instrument made from a feather whose tip has been cut into a pointed shape. Members of the wizarding world use quills to write, instead of Muggle pens or pencils (PS4). They usually have to be dipped into ink. There is a great variety of quills, some plain and simple, some, like Fwooper quills FBAZ), more fancy-looking, others enhanced with magical properties. There are Self-Inking Quills, Spell-Checking Quills and Auto-Answer Quills (HBP6, OP31), Umbridge's quill that doubles as an instrument of torture (HBP13), Rita Skeeter's Quick-Quotes Quill that writes on its own and turns ordinary quotes into lurid newspaper articles (GF18), and the Hogwarts Quill that records the name of every magical child born in Britain (ScC).

Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop in Hogsmeade specializes in quills (OP16). Additionally, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes sells several magically enhanced varieties (HBP6). Honeydukes stocks Sugar Quills, sweets that look like quills and can be consumed during lessons (PA5).

Hermione Granger gives Harry Potter a fancy eagle-feather quill for Christmas in second year (CS12).
