Six Harry Potter movies have come out so far. The sixth one was released on July 15, 2009.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Director: Chris Columbus

US release date: November 14, 2001.

Warner Bros. bought the film rights for the Harry Potter novels soon after the books became huge best-sellers throughout the world. Chris Columbus was the director chosen for the first installment; he accepted the job after his daughter talked him into reading the books.

Having become a Potter fan himself, Columbus made a point of following Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone with great zeal. While this attitude earned him many fans' approval, the reaction of film critics was somewhat mixed. Columbus' style was perceived by some to be far too rigid, and not faithful in translating the magic of Potterverse to the big screen.

In the fandom, however, almost everyone was extremely excited by the time of the release. Pictures and interviews with the cast and crew took over the front pages of sites such as MuggleNet and TLC, and legions of Potter fans attended the premiere wearing cosplay.

As soon as the first movie came out, the wait for the second one officially began.
