Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a compendium of magical beasts by Newt Scamander. It is one of the books required for Harry's first year at Hogwarts (PS5). A copy of Harry Potter's book is available for sale in the real world. All profits from sale are donated to a charity organisation called Comic Relief.

The book in the wizarding world

In 1918, Augustus Worme of Obscurus Books commissioned the young Newt Scamander to write an encyclopedia of magical creatures. Scamander agreed, and the first edition was published in 1927. The book became a worldwide best-seller and is now in its fifty-second edition. His research for the book has led Scamander to travel over a hundred countries on five continents to study magical creatures in their natural habitat (FBi).

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has been used as a Hogwarts textbook since the first edition. Albus Dumbledore claims that it is a main cause of the students' consistently high results in Care of Magical Creatures examinations. It is also one of the standard books in every wizarding household.

In the 1990s<ref>It is hard to place the publishment of the special Muggle edition exactly in the timeline. The book contains allusions to the first and second tasks of the Triwizard Tournament, so the earliest possible date is March 1995. Albus Dumbledore is still alive, so it must be before June 1997. Given that in the real world the book was published between the release of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, we can assume that in the wizarding world timeline the publishing falls between the events of those two books or into the early events of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.</ref>, Scamander agreed to the release of a special edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them available to Muggles and asked Albus Dumbledore to write the foreword. He also gave permission for the edition to be covered with the notes of Harry Potter and his friends (FBf).

The fifty-second edition of the book consists of a short biography of the author, Dumbledore's foreword, an introduction that contains a definition of the term 'beasts' and a history of Muggle awareness of magical creatures, and an alphabetical index of magical beasts.

The book in the real world

J. K. Rowling wrote Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, along with Quidditch through the Ages, for the charity organisation Comic Relief. It was published in 2001 as a book belonging to Harry Potter, with notes scribbled by the Trio scattered throughout its pages.
