Banshees are magical creatures with the appearance of a woman with floor-length black hair and a skeletal, green-tinged face . They scream in an unearhtly, wailing voice that makes the listener's hair stand on end (PA7) and probably has nasty effects on humans, though we do not know which (in Muggle folklore, the scream is associated with death, WP). They are probably Dark creatures, but this has never been confirmed in canon. We also do not know whether they are considered beasts or beings.
Gilderoy Lockhart wrote the book Break with a Banshee about his alleged defeat of the Bandon Banshee (CS6) who was actually defeated by a witch with a hairy chin whom Lockhart Obliviated (CS16).
Seamus Finnigan is particularly afraid of these creatures; his Boggart is a banshee (PA7). Seamus also thinks that the noise that comes from the golden egg Harry Potter receives at the end of the first task of the Triwizard Tournament sounds like a banshee (GF21).
Celestina Warbeck employs banshees for background singing (DP).
