Aurors are a group of elite witches and wizards who fight against the Dark Arts (GF11). They work for the Ministry of Magic in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

Auror training takes almost three years to complete, and is extremely difficult. To qualify, potential Aurors must achieve a minimum of five NEWTs (no grade lower than Exceeded Expectations), including Charms, Potions, Transfiguration, Herbology, and, most importantly, Defence against the Dark Arts. If they have managed to acquire the necessary academic qualifications, they then have to complete "a stringent series of character and aptitude tests at the Auror office." (OP29). After passing these tests, the future Auror is taught several disciplines, including Stealth and Tracking and Concealment and Disguise.

Aurors in the First War

During the First War, Barty Crouch, Sr., Head of the Department at the time, approved the use of the Unforgivable Curses against the Death Eaters (GF24). Albeit some people agreed with this, most of the citizens disagreed and thought that Barty was doing the same things the Death Eaters were.

The Trio

Harry Potter expressed considerable interest in this career after Barty Crouch, Jr., disguised as Mad-Eye Moody, told him and Hermione Granger that they both had "what it took" to be Aurors (GF25, GF28). Though he said nothing to Ron Weasley, Ron also considered becoming an Auror in the future (OP29).

When Harry announced his aspiration in his Career Advice session with Professor McGonagall, Dolores Umbridge declared he would never become an Auror, causing Professor McGonagall to swear that she would help Harry become one if it is the last thing she did (OP29).

In fanon, Lily Evans, James Potter, and/or Sirius are often depicted as Aurors, although there is no direct canon support for this. It likely stems from both the lack of given magical professions as well as the trio's heavy involvement in the First War.
