Bellatrix Lestrange (née Black, born in 1951) is one of Voldemort's most devoted Death Eaters. She is best known for torturing Alice and Frank Longbottom to insanity and for the murder of Sirius Black.

Bellatrix inherited the handsome features that the Black family was known for, as well as some Blacks' penchant for madness and unstable behaviour. She is tall, with black hair and heavily-lidded eyes (GF30). Though her time spent in Azkaban drained her of most of her youthful beauty, she still retains her arrogance and devotion to Voldemort.

Bellatrix is a pure-blood and was taught to hate Muggles and Mudbloods; she later became a Death Eater. She is a firm believer in the superiority of purebloods, unlike Sirius or her sister Andromeda.

At Hogwarts, she was Sorted into Slytherin, where she met Rodolphus Lestrange; he would later become her husband. Sirius mentioned her as part of Severus Snape's gang of Slytherin friends who went on to become Death Eaters (GF27), but the Black Family Tree suggests there is a sizable age gap between Bellatrix and Severus (BFT).

The First War and Azkaban

Bellatrix is one of Voldemort's most faithful followers. She married Rodolphus Lestrange only because she was expected to marry a pure-blood, but her true love was always Voldemort (BLC).

She was a Death Eater during the First War and is still one in the Second. After Voldemort's defeat, Bellatrix was imprisoned, along with her husband, his brother Rabastan, and Barty Crouch, Jr., for torturing the Aurors Alice and Frank Longbottom to insanity. During her trial, she defiantly announced to Barty Crouch, Sr. that the Dark Lord would return and reward them for being faithful to his cause (GF30).

After Voldemort's return, she was among the Death Eaters that was freed in the massive breakout from Azkaban (OP25).

Department of Mysteries

During the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Bellatrix tried to torture Ginny. She took great pleasure in using Crucio on Neville after she found out he was the son of the Longbottoms.

She is a very good duellist; she defeated Sirius in the Department of Mysteries, sending him through the Veil (OP35). In the aftermath of the duel, Harry Potter became so incensed that he wanted to murder Bellatrix. He then tried to use the Cruciatus Curse on her, but failed; she mockingly told him that righteous anger is not strong enough to cause pain for long (OP36).

The Unbreakable Vow

Bella openly mistrusted Severus Snape due to his double agent status as part of the Order of the Phoenix. She strongly opposed her sister Narcissa's decision to ask him to protect Draco after Voldemort entrusted the boy with the murder of Albus Dumbledore. When she questioned Snape, however, he answered all her questions and addressed her doubts without hesitation, criticising her for not trusting the Dark Lord's instincts and skills as an accomplished Legilimens (HBP2).

Bellatrix is an Occlumens; she began teaching the subject to her nephew, Draco Malfoy, upon his joining the Death Eaters (HBP15).

Bellatrix murdered her own niece, Nymphadora Tonks, in the Battle of Hogwarts.

  • Voldemort calls her Bella (OP36).
  • Bellatrix said that she'd be proud to have her son working for the Dark Lord, unlike her sister Narcissa (HBP2).

Bellatrix is frequently portrayed in fanon as a madwoman. Not only is she often the subject of several incest fics, but she often rapes, tortures, and/or murders most known characters in fanon. Many authors also pair her with Voldemort, believing that her unwavering loyalty hides a twisted sexual relationship of some sort between the two.
