The Battle of Hogwarts is a battle that occurred at Hogwarts on May 2, 1998 (YITL), fought between the Death Eaters and many wizards who opposed Lord Voldemort. It began as a way to give Harry Potter time to find Ravenclaw's diadem, the Horcrux that Voldemort had hidden inside the castle (DH30), and ended with Voldemort's death (DH36).

Hogwarts before the Battle

Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters took over the Ministry of Magic and murdered Rufus Scrimgeour, the last Minister for Magic, on August 1, 1997 (DH8). On September 1, Severus Snape was appointed Headmaster of Hogwarts. Two Death Eaters, Alecto and Amycus Carrow, joined the teaching staff (DH11).

For the duration of that school year, the Carrows set in place a strict disciplinary regime that included the teaching of Unforgivable Curses to students and the torture of those who were put in detention. The syllabus contained anti-Muggle lessons.

Neville Longbottom, Michael Corner and other members of Dumbledore's army attempted to resist the Carrows, and to undermine them at any possible opportunity. The group stopped their subversive feats when Neville's grandmother Augusta was almost kidnapped. She escaped her would-be captor, Dawlish, but Neville realised that the Carrows would have him killed at some point, and decided to hide in the Room of Requirement. Other DA members joined him as time went by (DH28, DH29).

Harry's search for the diadem

The quest for Horcruxes

By the time Albus Dumbledore died (HBP27), two Horcruxes had been destroyed: Tom Riddle's diary (CS17) and the Peverell Ring (HBP23). Over the course of the following year, Harry obtained Slytherin's locket (DH13, DH14) and Hufflepuff's Cup (DH26). The locket was destroyed with the use of Godric Gryffindor's sword (DH19), but Griphook stole the sword away before Harry could use it to destroy the cup (DH26).

Shortly after breaking into Gringotts to obtain the cup, Harry used the connection between his brain and Voldemort's to confirm his suspicions that another Horcrux was hidden at Hogwarts (DH27). Harry, Ron and Hermione Apparated to the village of Hogsmeade in order to enter the castle and search for it. With the help of Aberforth Dumbledore, they narrowly escaped Death Eaters who patrolled the village (DH28) and used a secret passageway between the Hog's Head pub and the school to enter Hogwarts.

The Room of Requirement

The passageway led to the Room of Requirement, where the Trio met several students who were hiding from the Carrows, such as Lavender Brown, Parvati and Padma Patil, Seamus Finnigan, Terry Boot, Michael Corner, Ernie Macmillan and Anthony Goldstein. Upon learning of Harry's arrival, Neville used the fake Galleons (DH29) that Hermione had enchanted with the Protean Charm (OP19) to send messages to Ginny Weasley and Luna Lovegood. Neville believed, as did all the other students, that Harry had come to organise an uprising against the Carrows' regime.

However, Harry had a vision of Voldemort's current whereabouts, and saw that the Dark Lord had discovered the loss of one of his Horcruxes—the Peverell Ring. Harry feared that Voldemort would visit Hogwarts next, and thus prevent them from finding the Horcrux hidden there, and for this reason he tried to leave the Room as quickly as possible with Ron and Hermione. The DA members refused to accept this, and offered to help.

Luna arrived moments later, accompanied by Dean Thomas. Ginny came as well, along with Fred, George, Lee and Cho. Ron suggested that Harry should ask the DA members for help and suggestions, considering that the Trio had no idea of where or what the Hogwarts Horcrux was. Harry agreed to do so, and announced that he had to find an object at Hogwarts that had once belonged to Rowena Ravenclaw. Luna reminded him of Rowena's lost diadem, and other Ravenclaws offered further information about it, but none of them knew where to find it.

Cho volunteered to take Harry to the Ravenclaw common room to show him a bust of Ravenclaw wearing the diamond, and Ginny intervened, asking Luna to take him instead (DH29).

The Chamber of Secrets

After Harry left, Ron and Hermione realised that Basilisk venom would destroy Hufflepuff's cup, and went to the Chamber of Secrets to obtain some of the dead serpent's fangs. Ron did a passable imitation of Harry saying the word 'Open' in Parseltongue, and Hermione destroyed the Horcrux (DH30).

The Ravenclaw common room

Harry and Luna used the Marauder's Map and the Invisibility Cloak to get to the Ravenclaw common room safely. Luna answered the question required to allow them to enter, and showed Harry the bust of Ravenclaw. The diadem on the top of Rowena's head had the sentence Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure etched into it (DH29).

Alecto Carrow, whom Voldemort had ordered to patrol the Ravenclaw common room (DH30), surprised Harry and Luna soon after they entered the chamber. Alecto used her Dark Mark to summon Voldemort (DH29). At that precise moment, the Dark Lord was near The Cave; he decided to enter and check whether the locket was in there before going to Hogwarts.

Luna Stunned Alecto, and the noise brought several Ravenclaws down to their common room. They did not see Harry and Luna, who were hidden under the Cloak, and were delighted to see that Alecto appeared to be dead.

Amycus Carrow, who had felt his sister summon the Dark Lord, hurriedly went to the Ravenclaw common room as well, fearing that she had called Voldemort in vain and that they would suffer the consequences of this foolish act. However, he was unable to get past the door, because he did not know the answer to the question it asked him. Minerva McGonagall heard his loud attempts to enter Ravenclaw Tower, and opened the door at his request. All Ravenclaws had retreated into their dorms by the time Amycus entered. He suspected that they had killed Alecto, and was both furious and desperate. He planned to tell Voldemort that the Ravenclaws had ambushed Alecto and forced her to press the Mark.

McGonagall stated that she would not allow Amycus to place the blame on students. He warned her against opposing him and spat on her face, which provoked Harry's fury; he came out from underneath the Cloak and cast the Cruciatus Curse on Amycus. He was in intense pain for a while, and fell unconscious after smashing into a bookcase.

Minerva was stunned to see him and Luna there. Harry asked her for the whereabouts of the Ravenclaw diadem, but she did not know; he decided to go speak to Professor Flitwick. McGonagall used the Imperius Curse on Amycus, who handed both his and Alecto's wands to her. The Carrows lay on the floor while Minerva conjured ropes to bind them.

Harry had a vision warning him that Voldemort was about to come to Hogwarts; he and McGonagall quickly planned to get the students out of the castle via the Hog's Head passageway while the teachers and the wizards of age who wished to fight secured the school. Meanwhile, Harry was to search for the Horcrux. McGonagall conjured a net around the Carrows and tied it to the ceiling, and left the common room with Harry and Luna, sending three Patronuses ahead of her to warn the other Heads of House of what was about to happen (DH30).

Confrontation with Snape

Minerva, Harry and Luna met Professor Snape in a hallway. Severus was hiding behind a suit of armour when they approached, and briefly argued with McGonagall, asking whether she had seen Harry. McGonagall tried to hex him, but he quickly cast a Shield Charm. The two teachers duelled.

Sprout, Flitwick and Slughorn soon joined them, and Flitwick also used magic against Snape. Despite this, Severus managed to run, break a nearby window, and fly away (DH30).

Preparations for battle

McGonagall informed the other Heads of House of Voldemort's impending arrival. She ordered them to bring all students to the Great Hall, and to organise some of the castle's defences; Sprout began thinking of plants she could use—Venomous Tentacula, Snargaluff pods, Devil's Snare—and Flitwick stood by the broken window, casting complex charms. He was unable to offer Harry useful information about the diadem.

Slughorn was reluctant to take part in the fight against Voldemort. McGonagall offered him the chance to leave with the students, and stated that he had better not sabotage the castle's defences or oppose its defenders. Horace agreed to go summon his students to the Great Hall, and left.

Before McGonagall could take further defence measures, Argus Filch came to warn her that there were students out of bed. She irritably told him to fetch Peeves, and used the Piertotum locomotor spell to bring the statues and suits of armour in the castle to life, ordering them to protect Hogwarts. Minerva told Harry and Luna to join the students in the Great Hall, and went to Gryffindor Tower.

The Order's arrival

Harry returned to the Room of Requirement, where he met several members of the Order of the Phoenix: Kingsley Shacklebolt, Remus Lupin, Bill, Fleur, Molly and Arthur Weasley. Oliver Wood, Katie Bell, Angelina Johnson and Alicia Spinnet had also come, because Fred and George had sent word to other DA members of what was about to happen, and DA members had alerted the Order.

Molly forbade Ginny from joining the battle, for she was underage; Ginny was extremely disappointed when Harry sided with her mother, agreeing that Ginny should leave.

Suddenly, Percy Weasley arrived, asking forgiveness to his family for his previous thickness. The Weasleys welcomed him back with open arms. Ginny tried to use the reconciliation as a distraction so that she could sneak out of the Room and fight in the battle; Molly caught her just in time. Remus, trying to mediate, convinced Molly and Arthur to allow Ginny to stay in the Room of Requirement so that she could have access to news of what was going on.

Ginny told Harry that Ron and Hermione had left earlier, mentioning something about a bathroom, and Harry did not understand where they had gone. At that moment, he had a flash of Voldemort's mind, and realised that the Dark Lord had arrived at the Hogwarts gates (DH30).
