First appearance in canon The Forbidden Forest (PS)

Bane is a centaur who lives in the Forbidden Forest. He has a great dislike for wizards. His hair, beard and body are black and he looks wild (PS15).

When Harry Potter first met Bane in the company of Hagrid, the centaur was distant, but civil. Later that night, when Firenze let Harry ride him, Bane reprimanded Firenze for acting "like a common mule". They argued, while a fellow centaur named Ronan tried to reconcile them (PS15).

Harry met Bane and several other centaurs again when Hagrid introduced the boy and Hermione to Grawp, who lived in the Forest. Bane was now openly hostile towards Hagrid, because the gamekeeper had helped Firenze escape from the herd's wrath after Firenze agreed to teach at Hogwarts (OP30).

Bane was among the centaurs who confronted Dolores Umbridge, Harry and Hermione (OP33). He carried her away deep into the forest after she insulted centaurs as "filthy half-breeds" and attacked them with magical ropes and Stunners (OP33).

At the beginning of the Battle of Hogwarts, the centaurs did not join the fight. Bane (and possibly other centaurs) watched as Hagrid carried the supposedly lifeless boy of Harry Potter out of the Forest. Hagrid angrily asked him whether he was happy now that Harry was dead him and called him a coward. The Death Eaters who followed Hagrid called insults at the centaurs.

The centaurs joined the fight against Voldemort shortly after this double provocation. They charged from the Forest shouting war cries. Bane, Ronan and Magorian fought their way into the centre of the battle in the Great Hall. The centaurs celebrated alongside humans after Voldemort's defeat (DH36).
