Asphodel

Asphodel is a potion ingredient that is used for the Draught of Living Death, a powerful sleeping potion.

In Harry Potter's very first Potions class, Severus Snape questions Harry what happens if you add powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood. Harry cannot answer this and several other questions, and Snape snidely informs him that the two ingredients make the Draught of Living Death (PS8). However, as Harry learns in his sixth year, this potion is actually quite complicated to brew and uses several other ingredients as well (HBP9).
