Amelia Bones was a middle-aged witch, and the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. According to Nymphadora Tonks, she was a fair woman (OP7); Fudge said she was extremely talented (HBP1). Amelia was the aunt of Susan Bones, a Hufflepuff in Harry Potter's year at Hogwarts (OP16).
Amelia's brother, Edgar Bones, was a member of the Order of the Phoenix during the First War against Voldemort He and his family were murdered (OP9).
Amelia was supposed to preside over Harry's hearing for the underage magic he performed in Little Whinging when confronting two Dementors. However, on August 8, 1995, when Harry arrived at the courtroom, Cornelius Fudge had taken charge, and Harry was tried by the full court. Bones, who was carrying a briefcase, was one of the interrogators present. She was astounded to hear that Harry had been able to produce a full, corporeal Patronus—it was an impressive feat for a wizard of his age.
Amelia was as surprised as the other interrogators to hear Harry's claim that there had been Dementors in Little Whinging. Dumbledore appealed to her when Fudge was unwilling to let Harry produce a witness for his defence: Arabella Figg, who claimed to have felt the effects of Dementors as well. Madam Bones confirmed that the Department of Magical Law Enforcement abided by the Wizengamot Charter of Rights, and that the accused had the right to present witnesses.
When Mrs. Figg described the effects of a Dementor's presence, Amelia believed her. Harry was cleared of all charges (OP8). On her way out, Madam Bones—unlike most of her fello interrogators—greeted Arthur Weasley, who had been waiting for Harry outside the courtroom (OP9).
Amelia told her niece Susan about Harry's hearing. Susan, too, was impressed to hear of Harry's Patronus, and she told him so on the D.A.'s first meeting (OP16).
Madam Bones was killed in the summer of 1996. According to Fudge, her murderer was probably Voldemort himself, and she put up a fight. The crime was reported in Muggle newspapers as a nasty, mysterious murder—Amelia lived alone and was found dead in a room locked from the inside (HBP1).
