In this century...

  • Due to inventions like the Cushioning Charm at the beginning of the century, broomsticks become more comfortable, but they are still bad at achieving high speeds and hard to control in high altitudes. There are no special racing brooms; Quidditch is played on every day models. Brooms are hand-made by individual broom makers such as Elias Grimstone, whose products are more handsome than practical (QA9).

Around the beginning of this century...

  • According to popular belief, the first Shrakes—magical fish that rip apart nets—are created as a revenge when Muggle fishers insult a group of sailing wizards (FBAZ).

The birth dates for the Dumbledores do not all match up.

Rita Skeeter and Aberforth's accounts of the time of Ariana's death are inconsistent with Elphias Doge's.

  • Doge claims that after Kendra's death (June 1899), he went travelled the world alone for a year and that Ariana died at the end of his trip. He was back for the funeral. This would place Ariana's death in the summer of 1900 (DH2, DH8).
  • Rita and Aberforth both say that Grindelwald arrived at Godric's Hollow shortly after Albus (around July 1899), and Ariana died a few weeks later (at the end of August 1899) (DH18, DH28). Given that this version of events is supported by two sources who both provide more detail than Doge, we'll go with the assumption that their version is correct.

Beatrix Bloxam's death year seems to have been misprinted on her Famous Witch card, where it says that she died in 1810, which is only sixteen years after her birth. The picture, however, shows an old woman. In his notes on The Wizard and the Hopping Pot, Albus Dumbledore dates her death on 1910 (BB); we assume that this year is correct.

Footnotes

  1. Dumbledore must have been born between June and September 1Rita Skeeter writes that he graduated from Hogwarts shortly before his 18th birthday (DH18). The school year normally ends at the beginning of June, and if Albus had been born after September 1, he would have started at Hogwarts a year later, and graduated at the age of 18 (JKRW). From this information, we can also deduct that he came to Hogwarts in 1892 and graduated in 1899.
  2. Aberforth started Hogwarts three years after Albus, in 1895 (DH2). That would mean he was born after September 1, 1883 and before September 1, 1884. We are going to assume that the earlier date is more likely because a picture of the Dumbledore family shows that he is older than his sister Ariana, who was born between June 1884 and June 1885 (DH11, DH18, DH28).
  3. When Ariana killed Kendra in June 1899, she was fourteen (DH18, DH28). Thus, she must have been born between June 1884 and June 1885. We are going to assume that the later date is more likely because a picture of the Dumbledore family shows that she is younger than her brother Aberforth, who was born after September 1, 1883 and before September 1, 1884 (DH11, DH2, DH18).
