At the beginning of this century...

During the first half of this century...

  • Burdock Muldoon is Chief of the Wizards' Council.see inconsistencies
    • Muldoon decrees that all magical creatures walking on two legs are beings. The definition is obviously flawed—it excludes intelligent creatures like ghosts, merpeople and centaurs and includes irresponsible birds, trolls, pixies, fairies, etc.
    • All creatures that match the criterion are summoned to a meeting to discuss new magical laws. The summit is a complete failure—goblins bring as many two-legged creatures as they can find and create a chaos. Muldoon slips on Porlock dung when he tries to open the meeting and runs cursing from the hall.
    • After the summit, Muldoon makes no further attempts to integrate non-humans in the government (FBi).

Around the middle of this century...

At some point in this century...

  • The German broom game of Stichstock dies out (QA2).
  • Muggles are afraid of magic, but bad at recognizing and fighting it. They try to burn witches, an attempt that is completely useless against real witches who simply use Flame-Freezing Charms. Wendelin the Weird is so fond of this that she lets herself be captured and burned forty-seven times under different disguises (PA1).

Timeline inconsistencies

Full article: Timeline Inconsistencies

There are a number of timeline inconsistencies concerning the 14th century. These concern information from Famous Wizard cards on the one hand and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch through the Ages on the other hand.

  • According to his card, Burdock Muldoon lives in the 15th century (14291490), and serves as the Chief of Wizards' Council from 1448 to 1450. According to the introduction to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, however, he is Chief of the Council in the 14th century.
  • It also says in the introduction that Muldoon's successor is Elfrida Clagg. This is in line with the information in chapter four of Quidditch through the Ages, which claims that Clagg is Chief of the Council in the middle of the 14th century. But according to her Famous Witch card, Clagg lives from 1612 to 1687, making it impossible that she succeeds Muldoon in office for either of the dates given for his life.
  • Bowman Wright is supposed to have invented the Snitch in the 14th century, during Clagg's time in office. However, according to the dates on his card he lives from 1492 to 1560, which does not match Clagg's lifetime at all and places his invention in the 16th century.
  • The conflicting dates for these historical figures also throw doubts on historical events linked with them, namely the introduction of the Snitch to Quidditch, the abolition of Snidget hunting, and two summits held by the Wizards' Council to find a definition of beasts and beings.

Footnotes

  1. In 1991, Hermione finds the information that Flamel turned six hundred and sixty-five last year in an "old book". That means that the earliest possible year for Flamel's birth is 1325 (year before current year minus Flamel's age). The book looks old, so it was presumably published several years prior to 1991, placing Flamel's age closer to the beginning of the century, possibly even in the last years of the 13th century. The Harry Potter Lexicon gives Flamel's birth year as "ca. 1326", disregarding that the book explicitly states that Flamel's six hundred and sixty-fifth birthday occurred a year before the book was published. The same arguments apply for Perenelle, whose earliest possible year of birth is 1332 (misdated by the Lexicon as 1333) (PS13).
